All
wall anchors fall into two main categories, and are used according to the wall material's density and strength:
expansion anchors and
hollow wall anchors.
Expansion anchors are used when mounting occurs in thick, solid materials such as concrete, brick, mortar, metals, and some types of wood.
Wood screws,
sheetrock anchors, and
plaster anchors expand when a screw or bolt is threaded into them, and they are only as sturdy and strong as the material they are being threaded into.
Expansion anchors are not to be used on soft materials, like drywall, or they will become weak and possibly break or fall out of the wall.
Hollow wall anchors are made just for thin or hollow walls, such as drywall, because they spread out within the "hollow," or soft material, of the wall. The
anchor cannot be pulled back through the hole because it expands once it goes through the wall and the hole is smaller then the anchor.
