Ah, that old holiday hangover. We’re not speaking totally literally (unless someone got a little into the spirit(s) of the season, if you catch our drift) but the few days after the winter holidays have concluded can be a little...draining. It can feel like there’s too much to do and nobody has the energy to do it - especially if you still have to get ready for New Year’s!

But there’s some little chores you can get done around the house that won’t take up an entire afternoon and still help you feel like everything is getting back to normal after the chaos of a long holiday weekend! Here’s a few things you can try:

  • Start by taking down those decorations. Get some plastic storage bins and remember to take your time: re-use wrapping paper and tissue paper to cushion your ornaments as you put them in their boxes, use gift wrap or paper towel tubes to keep your lights and garland from getting tangled, and use blankets (or a tree skirt) to cushion the bottom of your storage bins for additional protection from damage.
  • Next, you’re going to want to take a second and clean up any remaining stains. Chances are something got dropped that you’re not aware of, and the longer it sits the worse it will get. Blot up any stains on the carpet with warm water and mild dishwashing soap, and keep blotting until the stain is all gone. Give it a second to dry, and it’ll be like there was never cranberry sauce on the dining room floor to begin with!
  • Now would be a good time to organize any cards you got as well. Get some Tupperware or zip-lock bags, stash all your cards away, and tuck them into a filing cabinet or up on your closet shelves to look at next year. (This will also prevent any awkward feelings you might have about throwing them away.)
  • If you hosted dinner at your house, you’re probably stuck with a lot of leftovers that you need to put away. Go through your fridge and toss out everything you don’t need anymore (extra ingredients, leftovers there’s not enough of to worry about saving, etc) and reorganize the rest by size. You’re probably kind of sick of Christmas hame by now, but you still have a lot of it left and it’s probably worth doing something creative with, right?
  • With the fridge out of the way, you might need to put some of the dishes away that you haven’t gotten to. Pour some salt and lemon juice into your pots and pans to help get the smell out, use baking soda for the really tough dishes, and don’t hesitate to use your space on your kitchen islands to store more of your excess cookware until the next big gathering.
  • Figure out when trash day is so you know when to haul all the waste (and your tree) to the curb. Nothing is going to spoil your holidays like pine needles all through the house - get that tree out as soon as you can!
  • Finally, don’t be afraid to regift. A lot of presents are given with the best of intentions, but if something really isn’t going to work for you, or if you got a duplicate of something, now might be a good time to return them to the store or donate them to charity to get them out of the house and reduce clutter.
